The Shan Women's Action Network (SWAN) has published a different type of guidebook. This courageous alternative guidebook focuses on the cultural repression and distortion committed by the Burmese military in Shan State. The importance of this issue cannot be stressed enough. As SWAN say "Given that experiencing local “culture” is a primary aim of tourists visiting Burma, we feel it is important to expose how Shan State culture, religion and history are being distorted and erased, and gradually replaced by the regime’s own homogenized and artificially imposed “Myanmar culture.”
SWAN are a non-government organization, whose mission is to work for gender equality and justice for Shan women in the struggle for social and political change in Burma through community-based actions, research and advocacy.
